This is a bit of a darker Arthur/Eames than my own headcanon provides, but it's a hell of a fic!

-- Pablo Neruda

Life is not full of grand gestures. Life is not full of dramatic exists and entrances or perfect camera angles or explosions. Life for someone like Arthur, is like constantly feeling like a secondary character in his own storyline. That's not anyone's fault but his own because Arthur is Arthur, a protagonist here (and probably an antagonist as well because he can be). This is a story about Arthur, who happens to love people and who happens not to love them. But the point is, this is a story about Arthur who doesn't know it's a story about him. This is story about finding out what it means to be a hero to the right people, what it means to know yourself and, by accident, to let other people learn to know how to love you.

Arthur is figuring his shit out.

I suspect this is going to be a stressful week for Sherlock fans ... knowing what might/must be coming Sunday night ... so I thought I'd rec this little happy ending AU now that it's finally a completed work. I've probably mentioned it before, but we got the last chapter over the holidays and I realized I had forgotten to mention that...

So ... what if Sherlock and John were actors who met and fell in love while they were filming a movie about two men meeting and falling in love? What if it were sent in current day Hollywood. Not an RPF, but full of real people none-the-less. :)

If any of that is peaking your interest ... then have at it. It's DELIGHTFUL.

You guys I could probably find a million great things to say about this Merlin/Gwaine fic. Maybe I love it so much because I know pining so well. I don't know ... but love letters ... political intrigue ... UST ... oh so MUCH UST...

I started reading this the other night, and couldn't stop. I was up until 2 a.m. finishing it. If you like Merlin/Gwaine, and need a love story betwixt them... carve out some time and READ READ READ. Its as much about what ISN'T said, as what is, but that just adds to the loveliness, IMHO.

(p.s. for chat peeps. Gwaine's thighs get mentioned three times in the first chapter ;)))

(p.p.s -- I want fan art of Gwaine in the surcoat he is gifted with towards the end of the story. So much!)

Sherlock fic continues to eat my brain. Nothing new there. But all along I've been off-handedly looking for some fic where Sarah was a decently rendered character and not just the girl to get out of the way pronto in order to get the boys in bed together.

Well I came across a fic the other day where John and Sarah decide its time to include Sherlock in their relationship, and it's got great Sarah moments, great John moments, great Sherlock moments, and and every permutation of them all combined ... and its hot as hell. Also. Naval puns. Quebec will never not be funny now...

So if you need some John/Sarah/Sherlock in your weekend, give this a try :)

I've read a bunch of Sherlock/John porn (not that there's ANYTHING wrong with THAT) but I kept looking for some fic with a bit more oomph behind it. Some layers, some style, some ... SOMETHING that would set it apart from the rank and file PWP.

And Lo I found a couple fics lately that have really stood out to me, and so I thought I'd boost the signal on them a bit.

The Death and Resurrection of the English Language
Rating: NC-17

Sherlock here is borderline certifiable. But I rather like that he's dark and twisted and possessive and messed up. It's a deep dark ride, but well worth it.

"What have you done?" ...

John won't look up from his tea and paper when he repeats this question, and that is...that is just so bloody beautiful. Blinking, Sherlock finds that he can only smile. He has just been outplayed. Expertly outplayed, and it feels wonderful, it really might as well be Christmas, except that Christmas comes once a year and outplaying Sherlock comes perhaps once every three to four years after Mycroft is discounted, the smug bastard. Sherlock feels like laughing, feels it creeping up from his ribs to his lips. So very few people ever dare to challenge him, possibly fearing that he might tie them up for days and have his way with them. With John, that danger is obviously...rendered a moot point. Sherlock can tie John up and have his way with him for days anytime he wants, he's beginning to quietly, rapturously, tremblingly suspect, and so outplaying the detective is not risky. It's fun."

and then for a bit of a change of pace, a fic that explores the backstory of Mycroft and Sherlock.

Sonata Form
Rating: PG-13

This is the sort of fic I always wish my writing felt like ... spare and poetical and lovely. Full disclosure, I haven't actually read this one, but I listened to the podfic of it in bed last night, and it is now lodged surely in my own 'head canon.' The Holmes boys are awkward and prickly and connected in ways they'd rather not think about. Truly a terrific piece of writing!!

"Rain patters down softly against the windowsill, forming small rosettes of water, frail and soon gone.

The stereo is on, volume turned low.

“I abhor Mozart,” Sherlock drones from the sofa.

“You are in my house. We will listen to whatever I choose.” Mycroft stares at his brother with tired eyes and twists one corner of his mouth down. “I am anticipating a full refund for the spectacular damage done to my undeserving bedroom, by the way.”

Sherlock snorts, but only because they both know he’s poor as a church mouse and a thousand times less faithful.

The music rolls on.

“‘Confutatis… maledictis…’” Sherlock chants along with the choir. “They’re singing about Hell.”

“‘Hell is empty, and all the devils are here,’” Mycroft quotes automatically.

Sherlock’s gaze flits to his brother, then back away. His closeness is strange and unusual, body oddly foreign in this context. “How true,” he says, before letting his eyelids fall shut."

Wherein I give you recs to stuff I read and found interesting.

I still don't know that I buy Sherlock/John as a sexual relationship, but I am happy to read fics and see what works for me and what doesn't. Heck, I read a LOT of Goren/Eames over in the LOCI fandom and I never once bought that as an actual 'hey let's have sex and fix each other' relationship. But it was fun!

So here's a few different takes on how Sherlock and John might have ended up in bed together.

Title: What Makes Us Rich
Author: [ profile] flawedamythyst
Rating: explicit
Length: 3128 words
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Sherlock/John
Summary: In which an asexual Sherlock tries to figure out what John sees in sex. Sherlock likes experiments, but the results are not always clearly defined. Fascinating look at the compromises and compensations of a complex relationship.

Sherlock beamed at him and stood up, crossing the room to him in a couple of fast strides. Suddenly, the prospects for entertainment this afternoon were looking up. He pulled John to his feet and kissed him, dragging him close and taking the time to feel both the texture of his jumper, rough against his fingers, and his hair, which was even softer than he'd hypothesised.

It didn't take much time after that for them to get upstairs, twined together on John's bed (“I wasn't kidding about needing a Hazmat suit to touch yours, Sherlock.”) and swiftly losing items of clothing. Sherlock poured over John's body, testing the different textures of it: the smoothness of the untanned skin on his sides, the thin texture of the hair on his chest, the uneven scarring on his shoulder. It was fascinating to see it all spread out for him, exactly as he'd thought it would be, all of his history on display for Sherlock to read at his leisure.

Title: Beethoven's Two Romances
Author: [ profile] pixieblues
Rating: PG
Length: 2870 words
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Sherlock/John
Summary: In which John gets seduced in ways he never thought he would be ... or even thought he wanted.

Sherlock does stop playing this time, only to level an affronted glare at John. “And you say I have no knowledge of the ‘real world’. This is one of the most famous pieces of music in history, and the foundation of most of the songs ever written.”

John shrugs carelessly. “Music’s never been my forte.”

Sherlock rolls his eyes. They couldn’t be more different people, John thinks as Sherlock lifts his arms again, and he turns back to the headline of today’s newspaper.

“I shall just have to educate you then, John,” Sherlock murmurs, more to himself than to his companion, and the recognisable tune of Canon in D strikes up once more.

Title: Timeline
Author: [ profile] entangled_now
Rating: explicit
Length: 1310 words
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Sherlock/John
Summary: Sherlock needs John. John is endlessly useful in all kinds of ways. Also a bonus fic for those of you with a fondness for people writing on their bed partners.

John's tempted to protest again, because Sherlock gets far too many things his own way.

Until Sherlock says his name, in that heavy, familiar way that John's completely incapable of saying no to. Moreso since he ended up in Sherlock's bed, which he's not sure if he should worry about or not.

bluecastle: (merlin + arthur)

I am officially obsessed with this Merlin fic. I've read it three times in the last two days and I'm not even sure why exactly. But it's sweet, and hot, and touching, and an entirely (or y'know mostly) plausible AU set in the modern day English monarchy.

As I've been working on my longfic (7,000+ words and counting!) I have come to love the phrase "What if?" What if X happened? What if Y did this?

And this Merlin fic, man ... what if Prince Arthur WAS the Prince of Wales, and Uther was the King of England? What if Merlin was the protege of the royal physician, and also a little bit magic. What if Arthur and Merlin met accidentally one day ... what if??

Well, it's just a cracking good story, and so funny in spots I laugh myself silly.

And the ephemera ... if you read it make sure to read the Vanity Fair article. Adds a nice extra layer to it all.

Oh, hell, just go read it if you haven't already so I am not alone in this!

So have gotten nothing done work related this morning. So while I ponder going out and getting something for lunch (although I had to park in the farthest lot and don't really want to walk out to my car in the COLD) ... here are a few things  I have skimmed off the surface of mah brain.

Some days ago, a Yahoo alert popped up this interview with James Marsters about Twilight, Torchwood, Caprica and the power of pissing people off.

I twittered the link, but if you didn't see it there ... here it is ... and I still want to know if the stuff JM's niece is writing is fanfic. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Also via Twitter (only the other way 'round) courtesy of @dorothymarley -- (TW: 2008: poisontaster: Coda and Requiem) (WHO IS SHE? Her Delicious bookmarks get posted to Twitter, that's all I know) a Dub-con Post-Cyberwoman story from Feb. 2008 that I really liked.

Ianto keeps trying to disassociate, Jack keeps trying to make him FEEL... and the memories of Lisa keep getting jumbled up with the reality of Jack. Good stuff there [ profile] poisontaster .

On the writing front, I have vowed to myself I will write at least 100 words on "Lust" today -- given that it's Torchwood, this should not be difficult. Now I just have to pick a victim. Any suggestions? It just can't be Gwen. I used her last week.

And I went crazy again and signed up for [ profile] dark_fest  -- I always wanted to read a story where Ianto comes back after his suspension in order to exact revenge upon Jack as he said he would. So when that prompt popped up, I thought... maybe I'll have a go at writing that. So now I'm leting my imagination play in the dark twisty corners of Ianto's mind. Fortunately there are a lot of them :)

On RL front, I am planning a movie monster night to make mah pals watch GDL's Shlock ... um Sherlock thing. Also on the offing are Shark Attack 3 (LOL) and the MST3K episode where the watch the ever hilarious "KILLER SHREWS" (which look a lot like German Shepards with mop heads stuck on them to me). On the menu... breakfast foods.

OH AND (What made me think I didn't have anything to talk about?) I have been tapped by Director Cee to go and help out with the local poetry recitation competition this coming Monday morning. Much like a spelling bee there's this local level of competition to select our representative to the state competition. So reports on that of a Monday.

OK... lunchtime!

I doubt there's anyone on my flist that hasn't already had this pimped to them... but just in case ... I have to put my two cents in on this piece of epistolary brilliance by [personal profile] amand_r that I was SO pleased to have been a small part of.

If you've ever wondered what Jack keeps in that tin box of his, you MUST read this ... Reclamation

bluecastle: (LOCI)

I don't rec fics very often (plenty of other people do it so I don't have to!) and rec Law and Order: Criminal Intent fics even more rarely, but I read a short post ep. today that is a bit meta about fandoms. Given that LO:CI will be replacing 3/4 of it's remaining cast during next season's premiere, the fandom is sort of eating it's own young right now, and reminds me a bit of all the post CoE sturm und drang.

But there's a few people looking backwards as well as bemoaning the future.

This fic was sparked by episode 4.12 "Collective" about a woman preying on vulnerable fans she connects with at fan conventions. After the murder by cop of a guy called Arnie who collected rare 1950s toys, they track this woman to a literary Vampire fandom a la Anne Rice, where she ends up being murdered herself (in a coffin set up to provide the experience of erotic asphyxiation). But it's up to detectives Goren and Eames to discover whether it was her "boyfriend" or his friends who was responsible for her death. [The final aria is set in a the fans gothic Brooklyn "crypt" which must have been a lot of fun for the scenic department!]

Author: Patcat
Category: Law and Order: CI
Character(s): A. Eames & R. Goren
Words: 1,974
Summary: “And as naïve as he was…He didn’t have a chance.” Alex deftly changed lanes and moved into the entrance to the New Jersey Turnpike. “But the toy…All these toys…Why did they mean so much to him?”
Genre(s): Friendship/Angst
