Yes. Well, I was going to write about the movie I watched last night… but maybe I have to say something about THIS instead, which is Russell’s take on the big happening on Day Four of CoE.
 

 

And I’m of two minds about this. On one hand, it’s his show and he can do what he likes with it. I’m all about supporting people telling the stories they want to. I don’t necessarily want someone other than me framing my narrative, so why should I tell him what to do.
And I DON'T want to tell him what to do with his story. I wish he hadn’t felt he needed to kill of Ianto, but in the context of the story I was ok with it. (Shattered and heart-broken in the moment, but ok still.) I think his death meant too little in the battle against the 456, that there should have been more meaning in it. But he died standing up for something he believed in, and he didn’t die alone. Death is often really really unfair, so while it hurt, I could process it.
On the other hand, I think what’s ticking me off lately (and maybe it’s such a hot button issue for me since I’m seeing it in my other fandom) is for the producers of TV shows who seem not to care very much about the audience for their product.
I’m not saying you’ve got to whore yourself out and make your show one of those builder beige show homes wherein there’s no life. But don’t go around saying “oh, it’s just a few silly fans. They’ll get over it.”
Sure we’ll get over it, but why are you dismissing us so casually?
As we like to say around the theater… no child dies. The making of an hour long scripted television drama is not some earth shatteringly important thing (Well, CoE came close *wink*). But brushing aside the fans because you’re SO committed to your art. Maybe not so wonderful that, Rusty.
I don’t know. It bothers me in ways I’m still trying to figure out. It’s like some kind of giant failure avoidance ploy. Like he’s dumping the fans before they can dump him so he can feel in control. I sorta hate that.
Which might be more about me that him, but this kind of thing still annoys me a bit here on a Friday morning.
