bluecastle: (goren and eames)

So let's face it ... long before CBS decided to reboot Sherlock ... 11 years ago in fact, NBC rebooted Sherlock as a cop drama spinoff of Law and Order. And NBC gave their Sherlock (the off-beat cop Bobby Goren) a female "Watson" first. Her name is Alexandra Eames and she, as played by Kathryn Erbe, is AWESOME!

12 years on from the debut of Law and Order: Criminal Intent there's only one Law and Order still on the air. And just yesterday SVU announced that they're bringing Alex Eames back for at least one SVU episode, but maybe more.

I am excite!

Truly, Alex Eames is one of the most underrated TV cops. She has been awesome from the very first episode where, in an office supply shop full of burly undercover male cops she brought down the suspect with one well placed knee to the groin. Thus began a long tradition of Eames being the muscle in that partnership. All the more awesome because Eames is TINY!

(Well, Goren is very tall, but still... ) Exhibit A:

eames and goren

Tiny but kickass ... and always in heels!!

Alex Eames worked her way up through Vice to the elite Major Case Squad on the 11th floor of One Police Plaza, and then she got partnered with a corpse sniffing weirdo, but somehow they made it work. Other relevant backstory: Eames is a widow, whose cop husband was killed in the line of duty. In 10 seasons, Goren never ever called her by her first name (introductions excepted) until, what, about season 8 or 9 when they went back and solved her husband's unsolved murder (in the way off all cop shows!) and that was just ONCE. She, on the other hand, nearly always called him Bobby. She always drove their SUV. (Also from the very first episode. And I NEVER understood why they got an SUV and the rest of the cops on the show got the usual unmarked regular cars. LOL). She likes her margaritas large, and her martinis dry!

As further proof of her awesomeness, Eames also volunteered to serve as a surrogate for her sister and gave birth to her own nephew. (To cover Erbe's real life second pregnancy.)

This is a cop who, when kidnapped and strung up on a meat hook, unscrewed the hook from the ceiling, pulled herself up a rock wall, STILL IN HEELS using the hook and her bare fingers, and got herself rescued while her partner and the rest of the male cops ran around New York chasing dead ends.

But the hallmark of the show for me was always the partnership and loyalty between Goren and Eames. And it's not like Goren made it easy! The show actually addressed that in a small, controversial (to the fans) scene, when a perp was being handcuffed she starts spouting her "research" on the partnership and how Goren had dragged Eames down over the years, and kept her from getting promoted, and more or less ruined her career. The uniforms drag the harpy off and the two of them have a quiet little scene where he says basically, 'um ... was she right?' And blessed wonderful no-punches-pulled Eames does something totally brave and wonderful. She tells him the truth and says 'yeah, maybe.' But its also clear that she's not going to leave him. It's a beautiful moment.

For 10 years she called him on his bullshit, but was the first one to go to bat for him. It was lovely to watch!

They actually cancelled CI twice. The first time, at the end of season 9 they left with a big emotional episode that ended with a hug between the two of then, then Goren kissed her cheek and walked away.

Then they brought the series back for like 6 more episodes, and that one ended with them driving off downtown into the sunset onto another case.

But now, it seems she's doing some work with a terrorism task force and will somehow intersect with one of SVU's cases.

I appreciate when my fictional fandom characters live on, doing their own thing. I love it more when they crop up on current shows from time to time so that I can visit them :D

So anyway, sorry Tommy, it was all about another Eames today. And let's face it. Inception's Eames would totally get his ass kicked by Alex Eames. ;) He'd try and put the moves on her, and Arthur would find him the next day, trussed up in the back of his sporty little car with a dazed look on his face. HA!

ARE YOU ME?!! :D I LOVED CI, loved Eames, loved Bobby, OMG, loved the whole thing. That they were Sherlock and Watson was always clear and yet not a thing--they were their own awesome selves. And for all those insisting that Elementary will inevitably go down the romance path because that's what American TV always does, I say THIS, this absolutely perfect partnership, right here. Wooooo! I am excite that they're bringing her back, too, though I'm not a fan of SVU and never watch it. I'll watch this one, though--when is it airing?

According to current SVU/former LOCI showrunner Warren Leight ... probably mid October but they don't know for sure yet. But I'll keep you posted! CI was my very first full fledged fandom so Bobby and Alex are very dear to my heart! YAY for finding another fan of them!!!!!

I've never gone looking for CI fandom, but, yeah, of course it's out there. There are probably a lot of romance stories, I imagine--are there many good gen case stories? Did you write for it?

(I read a Lewis story the other day that made me--reluctantly--see the romance there, and it was awesome, with a great case: Rich and Strange [http://archiveofourown.org/works/482648]. Have you read it? I'm going to give in and get on board with the romance, as long as there's a well written case attached. :)

well, in those days all I knew from fic was what I found on ff.net ... so a lot of smut (somewhere I might still have a link to the all smut all the time webpage for CI) and not much case fic!! I should root around on AO3 and see what might be there someday.

I have a couple small broody Goren fics up on AO3. Hmmm. did I move my CI stuff over? Well, I forget. LOL! My first fic ever was a CI AU where Bobby was a priest who Alex ran into when she got the call about Joe. It was very bad.

But then a CI/Torchwood crossover led me across the waters and my fic was all TW all the time for a while!

and HOW did I miss this Lewis fic? lunchtime reading, STAT!

:D

Fortunately my bad old earliest stories are lost forever, heh. (Except that I have a loooooong time online friend who still has some of them and can and will send them to me if asked. I don't ask.)

Enjoy! It's longish for one chapter, so don't be late back to work! Or have a good excuse ready if you are! :D

Great post! I ALWAYS think of this Eames first whenever I see the name in a fic header, before I realize it's probably Inception fic. I loved CI and this partnership. And I detest SVU, but I will watch it for Eames.
