ugh. tired of googling. whose brain wants to be my google?

story problem/issue.

in the original story of which I am stealing at least some of the plot ... the heroine is blind, uneducated, oppressed, and brings in a little money by stringing beads. She has a daily/weekly quota. That story was set in the 1960s.

In updating this, I am trying to figure out if there's some modern equivelant, or if can just leave in the bead stringing, which kind of works but isn't quite what I want.

Anyone have any brilliant thoughts. It needs to be something portable so the person can work on it away from home, and carry the supplies around in a small case/bag/package ... and not require much/anything in the way of book learning. (tho I am still debating this with myself)

Any ideas pop up ... lemme know will ya?

I think jewelry making in general or knitting would work? I mean, people are always making crap and selling it on etsy for a little bit of extra cash these days.
