Here is when you know you live in a small town... when a discussion about what to include in Halloween treat bags derails because various members of the committee suddenly decide that the parade route (which has already been submitted to, and approved by, the Borough Council) isn't LONG ENOUGH. So you spend the next hour drawing and redrawing maps of town trying to decide where the parade should start FROM, and where it should go TO. OMFG.

I glazed out somewhere in the middle and decided it didn't really matter to me what the parade route was. So I just let the battle rage around me!

I'm trying to think what we DID get decided. It didn't really feel like that much. But I think we decided on juice boxes and donut holes for post parade treats on the Courthouse lawn ... and we're doing 300 treat bags for the kids. We're still discussing what to put IN the bags. We're thinking:

kazoos
stickers
halloween themed pencils
candy
plus whatever we can find that's budget conscious.

what we will not be including from past years ...

a toothbrush.

:P

Last year was a slapdash affair as the people who had been running it were having business difficulties and dumped it off on others at the last minute (rather understandably, actually).

It's good that we have time to plan. Just NOT when we spend three hours on stupidity. And then there was the gossip about the planning for the town Christmas festivities! Also someone heard my endless prattling on about needing a town egg hunt and we're doing that apparently in the Spring in conjunction with the newly created Easter parade. (Can't wait to make a hat for that!! Millinery is my thing!!)

Thankfully, this week's Leverage re-runs at 11 pm so I can catch it then. I was really looking forward to being home by 9 to watch it first run. I've been looking foward to seeing Wil Weaton in this one for a while now.

But on the plus side, I got my Torchwood series two DVDs back. The friends I've hooked on the show were hooked good, and have gone on to watch series three and thought it was "brave." I felt bad for hooking them right before series three aired... but they don't seem to mind!

But enough small town politicking for one night!!

I feel like such a hypocrite. Every year during town-wide trick-or-treating I make sure that I am not home so I do not have to deal with small children ringing my doorbell.

This is sort of a family tradition. My mother was a teacher before she retired, and as a teacher it really doesn't pay to let the little bastards know where you live. So trick-or-treat night is a good excuse to go out to dinner and then wander the mall.

And somehow this tradition has somehow stuck with me.

And its sort of a shame. I like the holiday well enough (well, it scared the crap out of me when I was small, but I'm mostly over that now). I am a theater person. I love getting dressed up and being someone else. This is an activity I heartily approve of. I would wear quirky vintage stuff all the time if a) vintage stuff came in my size, and b) if I hadn't been brought up by parents who thought conformity was a BIG GOOD THING.

Also, let's face it... now that I no longer have a drag queen in my life {RIP Syb.}, Halloween is just that much less exciting. :)

{Although, this I know... if there's a drag heaven... they're having a hell of a party right now}

Happily though, I did get to do some Halloween-ing this year. I was asked to help judge costumes for the town Halloween Parade last weekend, and the judges were encouraged to dress up. So... out came the Little Red Riding Hood outfit. Hooray!! Was nice to see all the little (and big) kids and their proud parents and all the good things about Halloween.

And I did help out my friend tonight and supplied the flag pin for the lapel of his politician's suit jacket.

So Happy Halloween all... however you celebrate the day. Or even if you don't.
