I do these right after they air the first time (unless I have to catch it on tape), and its always sort of interesting to read them the morning after as I'm always finding myself wondering, "what DID I write anyway???"
This is Logan's penultimate episode. Just one more... my intuition tells me that Mikey probably won't survive next week's episode... but its a case of wait and see at this point. I just don't know where they could take the character now, but part of me hopes he gets fed up, quits, and starts his own detective agency. "Mike Logan, Private Eye" ... nice. But that's a long shot...
So this week we have a dead sex offender... and the possibility of a serial killer...
I'm struggling to describe this one... the first half is all about the images, the second half gets a bit procedural and the wrap up is pure sweet pain.
Neighborhood Watch the jigsaw puzzle... more than the sum of its parts...

Neighborhood Watch the jigsaw puzzle... more than the sum of its parts...

angry moms on playground
no dialogue, just mornful, ominous music
the kid pictured finds the flyer his kitchen trash can...
red haired girl. boys trash talking
an envelope under the door addressed to "kyle jones"

kyle closes the store, leaves work, finds ticket on car, adds to large pile of previous tickets, car won't start
headless body floats near abandonded industrial site

(ironically... the commercial that runs here is for super glue and contains the line "we have a severed head over here..." [in that case a doll's head]
L/W investigate this waterside crime scene {what is up with Logan cutting all his hair off... I hate this short do he sometimes sports}
no head, hands burnt, no prints
DotW says "mob" -- Logan thinks too sloppy.
Wheeler asks if they should tell Ross to kick it back to homocide
Logan: "My interest is piqued"
Wheeler: "piqued"
Logan: "it's my word of the week"
off to the ME. Rogers gives them the run down, Logan looks bored.
some funny logan/rogers banter about getting fingerprints from dead skin.
Ross on 11 -- they've now gotten the ID on the body {good work there Liz} Kyle Jones. 2nd degree rape (statuatory)
off to interview Kyle's mom in Maspeth, Queens {hooray a trip to the outer boroughs}
Kyle was 17. girl was 15. mom says that is was consentual, that they were in love, but that the DA and the girls parents made a big deal out of it and that's why Kyle got five years in prison.
Mom: "Tell me you're going to take this seriously"
Logan: (puzzled) "why wouldn't we... {we heart Logan. Logan cares}
Mom talks of police "harrassment" ... kept giving Kyle tickets every day and running up money mom doesn't have...
blonde girl in car. local news reports about kyle's death and his sex offender status (flyers, letters, etc...)
news in on in bar when underage kid tries to buy beer. bartender busts him.
L/W find Kyle's car. Logan tries to start it. Wheeler peers under the hood. {girl power ... she diagnoses the problem, a pulled ignition fuse}
l/w find the tickets in kyle's car (petty offenses) all written by a Sgt. Whelan.
interview Kyle's boss at the video store {add this to the list of bad places to work. video store = murdered} {was that a poster in the video store of that movie the Tru Love kid was in???}
Boss says Whelan and his Neighborhood Watch partner were always after Kyle.
L/W talk to partner who turns out to be the creepy customer we saw earlier -- Bob Goodman {nice name for a not nice man}
L/W talk to the angry playground moms. they say good riddance to bad rubbish.
shots of someone wearing yellow rubber gloves cleaning up lots and lots and lots (buckets) of blood

Logan, Wheeler, Ross at 1PP
the girl Kyle slept with is called Nancy Willams (the blond in the car)
Ross sends Logan to talk to the Dad (on a NY street) Dad has alibi
Ross sends Wheeler to talk to the daughter (sidewalk cafe) she says Kyle was the cabana boy at the club. was from the wrong side of the tracks (Lefrak City). says Ms. Driver the ADA got her to say it was rape.
Wheeler -- "did you think it was?"
Nancy -- "I guess it was..." {this girl gets an A in callousness}
back at 1PP Ross introduces Logan and Wheeler to Clete Dixon an old pal who was supposedly up for the MCS Captaincy. Ross got the job. Clete got retirement. Clete has six old cold cases that he thinks are linked to this one. Says he thinks they have a serial killer on the loose. Logan gets in a crack about all the maybes and possiblies sounding like "profiler B.S.". Ross admonishes with one simple "Logan..."
l/w take the cold cases to Rogers who studies them and then concludes that there are no real links between the six, and that only one of them even resembles their case. L/W and Rogers conclude no serial killer. L/W arrive back on the 11th floor to tell this to Ross to find Ross watching Faith Yancy interview Clete about the serial killer that NYPD doesn't want to admit to. {sour grapes Clete?} Phone rings as interview ends... C.o.D's surely (or the like). All Ross gets to say is "yes sir" "yes sir" "yes sir..." (repeatedly)
{Richie in background}
(commerical)
Ross on TV when we return scoffing at questions. press calling killer 'the avenger'. Rape case ADA -- Terri Driver. {she certainly drove Kyle's case} Ross says she's aiming for NY Attorney General and this is her platform. Ross sends logan and wheeler to talk her down. They ask her to pull back to prevent copycat killings. She isn't concerned. Says "justice was served" in Kyle's case. Logan goes off on her. She tells him he's just frustrated that he can't solve his case, and she'll just ignore his little tantrum. {She's a real stone cold you know what}
logan and wheeler plan. they decide to round up all of the locals in kyle's neighborhood with outstanding warrants and use them as leverage to get info on who might have killed kyle. {this seems rather clever to me. points for logan for thinking of it} montage of arrests, and token bits of info. which leads back to the bartender and the underage kid with the fake id. {ah... cops investigating. gathering info from a variety of sources. hooray for police work in action}
fake id is stolen id. belongs to jake lally. jake lally has a red -headed sister Brenda who we saw early on. kid with stolen id was jamie. Jamie is a schmuck. gives up other trash talking pals -- Ricky and Lew.
L/W talk to Ricky and his deadbeat mom. mom give him an alibi but everyone knows everyone is lying. {a jerk like ricky just can't care that much about cooking shows. "we LIKE cooking shows..." yeah. right.}
back to Ross. Ricky has a van. l/w wonder if this is enough for a warrant. Ross says no... but then says a brilliantly funny thing...
Ross "But... if you can't find a reason to pull over a '98 mini van and find a reason to search it..."
Cue one L/W traffic stop. boys nervous. end up sitting up against a brick wall while l/w search the van. Van has new carpeting. This is suspicious. When they lumilight it... there is evidence of luminol... and blood... and bleach everywhere. l/w even find it on the boys' shoes. Silly old boys. {you can order luminol on the internet??? cool.} {what was that the writers were saying about the suspicious google searches on their computers :0)}
(commercial)
L/W search Ricky's garage. hacksaw missing. Kyle's head could have been hacksawed off. this also seems suspicious. also the locked fridge. they pop the lock. Wheeler removes a large object wrapped in white butcher paper. unwraps it to reveal... a pot roast. {HA}
interrogation. Lew. the weaker of the two. says the killing
"wasn't HIS idea" Ricky just wanted to impress red-headed Brenda.
Wheeler interrogates Ricky while Logan and Ross watch, reflected in the window, bracketing Wheeler and Ricky... Wheeler hits him hard with blood in his garage. the dump site googled on his computer. the online ordering of the luminol... he is beginning to cave.
Logan jumps in and bluffs about Lew telling them everything. Then they bring up Brenda, and Ricky starts to really react... so they tell him that Brenda told them that she thought he couldn't possibly have killed Kyle since Ricky was such a loser. They poke him (Wheeler figuratively and Logan literally) and he confesses.
And then he confesses to the other six killings.
gosh... was Clete right???
nope. logan and wheeler refute all six by same killer.
now ricky says that he killed kyle but it was "self defense"
they point out that Kyle was stabbed in the back 15 times.
so no. no self defense dumbass.
Logan asks Ricky if he did it for the rush of killing. Asks Ricky "what DID it feel like?"
cue spooky music.
Ricky says... you know, it really just wasn't that much fun after all.
Logan: "would you do it again?"
Ricky whines--- nah... it was too hard. took too much energy cutting off his head, dumping the body, cleaning up the blood. Then looks up at Logan and Wheeler and asks plaintively "I'm not going to be famous am I?"
they pack up to leave case solved when Logan has just one more question. asks ricky if he knows about car fuses. Ricky doesn't know anything about them. {now see... this is important, but if he only had one question... shouldn't it have been 'where is kyle's head'????}
They meet with Ross who decries "... the banality of evil"
Logan bugged by the fuse loose end. goes back to Sgt. Whelan who admits to yanking the fuse to mess with the kid. Whelan seems not sorry -- either than he vandalized the car... or that Kyle is dead.
back at empty 11th floor, case wrapped. Logan tries to get Wheeler to come out for drink. offers to buy. she declines. and she has good reason. WE MEET THE FINANCE. {he's cute... with a cute accent --- seemed sorta vaguely british, but like the NZ or OZ end of the empire perhaps} [edited to point out that fiance is played by real life hubbie. Julianne is a lucky girl :0)]Then they go off to meet the in-laws and Logan is left alone... and he turns ...
... and ends up in Ross' office with a bottle of something (whiskey or scotch) between them. they are back discussing the DA's opinon that "justice was served"
Logan tells story of one of his first cases. guy dead on kitchen floor, throat cut. trail of blood to next apartment. when logan knocked, the door was answered by a guy holding a machete. Ross asks him what the guy said.
Logan " he said it was an accident..."
Ross "that's this job... its either tragic or stupid
Logan "even when it's stupid there's usually some reason [however flawed]. but this case... this kid did it for the thrill. but the thing is... he didn't even enjoy it..."
fade to credits. voiceover to next week -- "chris noth's last episode, logan's most traumatic case yet." nondescript shots ... except for the one of Wheeler crying.
