Down the Rabbit Hole
May. 4th, 2009 12:15 pm"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.
…so went my weekend performing as the Dormouse in a community interactive arts event.
Had a little warm up Thursday night as I met with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare to rehearse our scene… and then stayed at the studio for Improv class.
Spending a couple hours on Saturday and again on Sunday hanging out at the local coffee shop in a frock coat and a stupid hat encouraging kids (and their parents) to make up nonsense stories was great fun. Then we dragged everyone down to the town park for a free-form improv game of croquet led by the Red Queen.
For a town that isn’t all that into the arts we had a pretty decent turnout … it didn’t hurt that we got good coverage in three local newspapers, either.
But beyond all that for me was the opportunity to hang out with actors all weekend. We went to dinner both days, and out for dessert on Saturday (Sunday’s dessert was a pie picnic at the studio), and just spent hours talking and laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
Being so shy the performing isn’t always the easiest thing for me… but the opportunity to hang out with like minded people… it’s like coming home! (Which is totally a cliché, but also for me, totally true.)
So despite the rain, and the stupid hat, it was a wonderful weekend!!
