You would think that since I spend my weekdays bitching about all these terrible documentaries cluttering up my desk (and my work week) that the last thing I would want to do with my weekend would be WATCH A DOCUMENTARY. But a GOOD documentary is a wonderful thing. In that terribly clichéd phrase … I laughed, I cried (OK, I wept like a weepy thing) … as I watched Young @ Heart. But for the most part, it was that most favorite of emotions, laughter through tears.

It’s a documentary about a chorus of senior citizens in Massachusetts who have branched out from the usual show tunes … and are performing renditions of songs from bands I’ve barely heard of … rock bands … punk bands … and having a hell of a good time doing it.

Their oldest member is 92, the youngest is 72. And they’re tackling Coldplay!!

They’ve toured all over the U.S. and Europe … but you’ll never forget their performance in the exercise yard at a Massachusetts prison … those prisoners had no idea what they were in for…

If you need a shot of gumption in your life… check it out. The music videos interspersed within the film are pure, wonderful, laugh out loud GENIUS! “Staying Alive” has perhaps never been interpreted so aptly!

You don’t have to just take my word for it: The New York Times review
