5 can be a lonely number too...

1. Despite being 42 I don’t really think of myself as a grown-up. I lived at home until I was 30, when I moved into an apartment just a couple of blocks from the house where I grew up. A couple years after that my parents helped me buy a house. This was more their idea than mine. Yardwork and junk is not my idea of a fun way to spend an afternoon. But I think they felt I would be more settled, or secure or some nonsense if I had my own house. The house was brown when we bought it … and I called it the Little Brown House right out of those “Five Little Peppers…” children’s books. Then we painted it grey, and now it’s just called the Little House. Which is from another series of children’s books from the 20’s called “Maida’s Little {fill in the blank place: Shop, House, School, Theater, Zoo…}."
2. I like working for a Library, but I hate my job. Cataloging documentaries used to be fun. Now it’s just a pain in the ass. I’ve just been doing it too long. Unfortunately for me, and thanks to the job market, I think I will be at this crappy job for a while yet.
3. Being a cat owner is a total shock to me. We always had dogs. But be careful of saying randomly, “If I ever got a cat, I’d get an orange tabby and name it Daniel Striped Tiger.” Co-workers show up with stray orange tabby kittens the day after you say that and you feel compelled to take him home and love the lazy sod to bits.
4. I am an only child and have always preferred imaginary worlds to this one. Also, the bulk of my reading was books set before WWI, so I am not always sure how to meet people without the benefit of a formal introduction…
5. I could live on pancakes!
