“I am not alone”
Jul. 12th, 2009 12:09 pm1. Just got an email from the girl playing Emily in this one woman Emily Dickinson piece I’m dogsbody-ing that opens this week which reads in part:
Just thought I'd mention to you that my brother and mother are, as I write this, engaging and in engrossed in the very same Torchwood mini-series that had you all spring-loaded. It being the middle of the day, there is no liquor involved, but I'm sure that if I walked into the living room, they'd each be anxiously clutching a dog--there is quite a lot of screaming going on from Henry's computer. A little while ago, I heard my mother say "But WHERE is Doctor Who?" I have no idea what's going on, but if I listened carefully I don't doubt that I could hear all sorts of hopes crashing down around shoulders worldwide.
I wanted to suggest she ask for beans for dinner but it may be a bit too soon for levity if they’re doing all five hours in one go (and really could you stop in the middle?) I still feel a bit like I’ve had a run in with a Dementor after it all…
2. Gathering up stuff for our move from the rehearsal studio into the theater space (it’s a upper lobby type room). Still have to fake the daguerreotypes but I need a few things from walmart first.
3. Caught the last few minutes of the latest Law and Order:Criminal Intent Goren/Eames episode "Lady's Man" just before I hopped into the shower. I REALLY need to get to my write up on that as there’s all kinds of things about gender and identity that are bugging me. Given that the bad guy is in some way trans- … whether it’s transvestitism, or transgender, or some kind of multiple personality… There’s no way to tell for sure just what is going on in the guy’s head except that his source of strength and power is his inner woman Gabby (cue Goren’s aria about Jung and Anima). There haven't been a lot of non-heteronormitive characters on CI as a whole, but when there were they were usually treated well by the scripts/characters. But this time we have Goren slamming into the guy and calling him “sweetie” and all, and I really want to go back and look at this in-depth.
4. So… leaving Cardiff behind and moving into Amherst, Massachusetts today. It’s not much of a vacation, but a change of scene could be a good thing for a bit.
