bluecastleI was cleaning off my desk/computer table just now, and I found this handwritten fragment from my sort of vague idea of a book about a boy called Lovely. I have lots of ideas and no direction, but I thought maybe I'd get this down somewhere as it strikes me as being not totally useless.
Lovely, writing to his literary agent (Lovely, in this incarnation is a poet) Des Athney. Mickey is, somewhat obviously, his dog.
Dear Des,
By the time you get this letter I'll be gone. Catchy opening line, eh? Don't you always say writers should have one?
In this case, love, I'm going home. I need some time away to write. I've gone back to my Aunt's house -- the one who raised me. The house has been sitting here waiting for me. Maybe a change of scenery will be good for me. I've got to do something to get the creative juices flowing again. Mickey and I will be very happy here. We'll go for long walks and I'll introduce him to the squirrels in the cemetery.
I'm going to try some radio silence, Des. Take some time to listen to the sounds outside my window.
I'm sitting here in the window seat where I used to curl up and read when I was a kid. This old house has always been kind to me, and I need that right now. I'll stay in touch, even though I am, as it were, putting myself in the time out corner.
Who knows if I'll even be able to hack all this solitude.
