today I...
Jan. 5th, 2010 10:06 pm...am trying to decide if there is more to this, or if that's all there is...
"I didn't know you smoked."
"I think we've established there's a lot of things about me you don't know."
Ianto turned, walking away from Jack, who stood watching him, the hands jammed in his greatcoat pocket clenched in frustration.
Halfway down the block, Ianto turned back and looked at Jack. "You coming?" he asked, and then continued on his way.
Jack caught up to Ianto at the corner while they stood waiting for traffic to clear the intersection. Ianto tossed his cigarette into the gutter and went to light a second one. His shaky hands could not be attributed entirely to the cold weather.
"Ianto..." Jack said, reaching out, fingertips just brushing the ratty jumper when Ianto pulled away, and started across the street.
Jack surged across the road, finally catching hold of Ianto's arm, dragging him into the doorway of a deserted shoe shop. "Dammit, Ianto, just stop!"
There was a long silence before Ianto turned and stared into the empty shop window. Jack heard an anguished "I can't," as Ianto took another steadying drag on his cigarette.
"Can't what?" Jack asked softly as he stepped closer to Ianto, searching for something in the face reflected in the window.
"Stop," Ianto said, his eyes sliding shut, the single word both a confession and a warning.
