I really do try not to dwell on the negative... but here's an example of the kind of thing I overhear nearly every morning, which drives me crazy. I'm settling into my office and reading my emails and all that, meanwhile I'm listening to my coworkers in the office across the hall reading their emails to each other and discussing them.

S: I have an email here inviting me to a retirement reception for the Dean. [reads details of event]. Well, I don't think I'LL be dropping by. I'm sure she would look at me and go, "who are you?"

OK. Well, dear co-worker. If the Dean does not know your name that's you own fault. She knows MINE. [also pps ... we ALL got the same email...]

Frankly, I'm pretty sure our current Dean DOES know their names. She's a pretty with-it cookie, and only hope the new Dean treats us as well.

My co-workers take on the new Dean ... "Well, I'm sure WE'LL be the LAST department she visits."

Christ on a cracker, people. One of these days they're going to say something positive and I am going to fall over in shock!!

/vent.

Oh, God.

Have they started on about how nice it is "without all those students around"? That one always made me wanna slap somebody as we'd hardly have been there but for all those students.

Oh, yeah. That was last month. Next month the inverse will ramp up and they'll be complaining about them coming back. Sure 40,000 kids make for more work ... BUT THIS MEANS YOU HAVE A JOB!

OH... they were having a big bitch session yesterday or the day before about how they just can't understand "those foreigners."

I think my favorite was "Even when they spell it for me it makes no sense."

*sigh*

Welcome to the land of big Uni's in small towns... :}

Believe me, I get it.

I spent fourteen years at our local institute of higher ed in HR: HR Coordinator for a College, Mediator in Employee Relations, Director of Compensation & Employee Relations, and early on at the International Office dealing with work visas for graduate students in research.

It kinda made being my Dad's caregiver seem easy...at least I liked the people better!

In all fairnesss I STILL hate driving around here the first in late August and Septmeber: 50,000 undergrads all driving like maniacs or like country mice (nothing in between) and NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE GOING OR HOW TO GET THERE!
