I am not a child of the internet. Although I remember when it first started showing up in my life. After I got the part time job at the library in, what, 1992 I remember asking to go to a talk on work time about his new-fangled internet thing, in which they explained that in much the same way that you don't need to understand how the phone works to make a phone call, you don't really need to know how the internet works either.
I should mention that at that point it was a text based Gopher-ized thing, which we looked at at work on one color screens!
I didn't have internet at home until about five years ago or something so I missed out on that whole usenet/ IM thing. I simply didn't have the technology for it.
But today proves to me that I'm am getting the hang of this social media thing.
Noticed quite a strong smoke smell a couple hours ago, and so went outside and had a chat with songwriter!neighbor's wife as we watched a lot of smoke billow up down the hill from our houses. Then I came back inside, and asked Facebook what was going on. Within five minutes someone told me it was a house fire ... and a quick Twitter search turned up the local reporter for one of the local TV stations saying that news crews were on scene, and that smoke could be seen from the interstate.
The smoke has abated a bit now, so perhaps they have things under control. The whole house/neighborhood/town smells like a campfire tho.
The internets win one point today!
